Sumitomo Electric Group proudly presents the SumiDrill GDX series, a high-performance line of indexable insert drills engineered to tackle the challenges of deep hole drilling. This series achieves an optimal balance between high rigidity and efficient chip evacuation, making it an ideal solution for drilling holes with a length-to-diameter (L/D) ratio of up to 7D. The product line offers a diameter range from ø15.5mm to 27.0mm, accommodating a wide range of machining applications.
A key highlight of the GDX series is its optimized design for both the tool body and the inserts. The high-rigidity holder design significantly reduces drilling vibration, ensuring exceptional stability throughout the process. The proprietary flute design expertly balances chip evacuation with holder rigidity, a critical factor for successful deep hole drilling. The tool’s deflection is reduced by 35% compared to conventional tools under the same load, while pocket capacity is increased by 59%, further enhancing chip evacuation.
The GDX series features innovative 4-cornered inserts with dedicated designs for both the central and peripheral cutting edges. This ensures uniform cutting resistance and excellent drilling balance. The wiper flat shape is optimized to deliver superior machined surface quality with a glossy finish and a roughness of Ra=0.80μm. The combination of different chipbreakers (L-type for chip control and G-type for general-purpose use) allows for drilling in various materials, including stainless steel and general structural rolled steel.
